Stranger Than Fanfiction Thoughts
Alright guys - I was up until three in the morning reading this - and I made it to the end. There were some parts I skimmed, and I want to go back and reread to get the full details, but I thought I’d give you my thoughts on it.
I’m not going to spoil everything for you. But I’ll still put this under a cut. I will say - those of you who worried that Chris might be awful towards fandom, or feel ruined by ‘truths’ in this book - I say don’t be. I had a lot of trepidation coming into it, and all my fears were quashed. I think you guys will really enjoy it, tbh.
1. This book is for teenagers, and is about teenage fandom. I really want to make that clear - because the fandom Chris writes about? Is not us. Not my group of lovely older women who have long left teenagedom behind.
2. Cash Carter is not a Chris insert. I can totally hear Chris’s voice (especially when it goes into preaching mode, and bitching about fame), but he’s not at all supposed to be Chris. In the book, he’s very much supposed to be James Dean-ish (as stated a few times), he reminds me a lot of a young (straight) Neil Patrick Harris, though.
3. As an aside, I totally understand now why Chris didn’t realize Cash Carter had the same initials as him. I’m not going to tell you why I feel that way - cause it’ll surprise a fun little moment.
4. Cash can’t stand fame - at all. There’s a lot of shade at fame and the entertainment industry and all of it’s hypocrisy. And mostly Cash spends a lot of time in this book wanting people to like him as /him/ and not his character. Reality and Individualism are two huge themes of the book. (Are any of us surprised)
5. (This book’s themes are /very/ much similar to Struck by Lightning. There are a lot of things that will remind you of SBL, tbh.)
6. As far as I can tell, there’s not really much eluding specific Glee things. Cash’s coworkers are not at all standins for Glee people (as far as I can tell), but more so generic Hollywood types.
7. One funny moment, though is when Cash is talking about crossing Leo Dicaprio’s path and being so awestruck that he bowed at Leo (which totally reminded me of Chris’s comments about meeting Lady Gaga the first time).
8. Cash is kind of a douche-canoe throughout the novel. There’s a reason for it, though. I’m not entirely sure if the twist at the end fully redeems him for me, but I do need to reread for details. And I will say Cash is not really a bad guy.
9. The main story, however, is about the four fans. And these guys are just utterly adorable goobers who are fun and interesting characters. I really wish they’d been developed just a tad more, but that didn’t detract from my enjoyment.
10. There’s Topher (I believe he’s white - ah me and details...), and he has to take care of his younger brother who has cerebral palsy - which puts a damper on his college aspirations. There’s Sam, who knows he’s FTM transgender - but his parents have sent him to therapy to teach him how to ‘get over it’, and he has not come out as trans to his friends yet. Topher and Sam have crushes on each other, and their dancing around each other is cute and awkward and cute. There’s Joey - a black, gay kid who hasn’t come out because he was raised strict Baptist and feels that his gay urges are /wrong/. And there’s my favorite, Mo - an Asian girl who is the shipper of the bunch, and writes fanfiction, and wants to be a writer - she’s having a hard time telling her father, though, that she wants to go to the college of her choice.
(The four kids remind me of various facets of Chris more than Cash, tbh.)
11. The story is based on the four kids going on a road trip before college starts, and each of them struggling with their lives. And Cash kinda crashes that. And yeah - it’s about the hijinx they have along the way.
12. It’s a little preachy in places - the way Chris tends to be preachy. And there are some things that feel -- a little too easy. And, ngl, Cash gets a little annoying at times - these kids on their own roadtrip might have been enough for me. But it has a good ultimate message. None of these kids turn out bad or anything - and these kids learn a lot about life and growing up, etc, etc.
But - I think this is the best book Chris has written so far.
13. Also - there’s totally a Lady Gaga ‘Born this Way’ mention. As that is a theme of the book.
Some other, minor things
~The fandomy stuff reminds me more of a Dr. Who/Supernatural/Sherlock/Harry Potter fandom more than Glee. (Actually - you guys ever watch Galaxy Quest? The kids remind me of the kids on that.)
~There aren’t much more shippery shout outs - though there is a moment at the end where Cash talks about the necessity of understanding reality. But it goes beyond a message for tinhatters - and is more like a pointed commentary on today’s political state.
~Joey, the gay character, struggling with his urges, feels more authentic as a sexual character. I say this in compared to Cash - who’s supposed to like sleeping with random women, but it’s written hilariously awkward as Cash comes off as asexual (kind of in the way Carson Phillips did). So every time Cash talks about a girlfriend or has his fling with two girls at once I’m like - oh, right, Cash is supposed to be kind of a player. I just thought it was an interesting observation.
~Yeah - there’s a point where Cash has them all try pot - but that’s the worst thing that happens in the book. (And these kids are like, thank god I don’t have to do that again at the end of the book, it was kind of funny, tbh.) There is one time when Cash is like - oh, so I’ll bet you won’t learn this (something about pot) in college. And I’m like - Oh, Chris, bb, I can still tell that you never went. You would totally learn that.
~It’s funny because Cash keeps asking if he’s ruined the show for them after he keeps revealing ‘secrets’. None of the ‘secrets’ are that bad or shocking. I don’t think there’s anything that’s new or shocking for us.
~And I’m glad Cash doesn’t really ruin the show for them. These kids are bonded for life, y’all.
~Mo is my favorite - she’s the most adorable little thing. Also her fanfiction is hilarious.
////
So yeah - those are my thoughts. It’s a good, solid book - and the best Chris has written. There are some minor issues in it but nothing atrocious. I think you guys will enjoy it. If you guys have any questions - feel free to ask! :)
